I just discovered this sad news in an odd way. Randy and I were roommates for a year in Modesto in 1976. We lived in a brand new, 3-bedroom home in a new suburb, so new that we had to wait for months to get a phone ('landline') installed.
Only yesterday I was telling my 22-year son about this most wonderful and crazy year. (Anyone who knows about Randy's youth knows why I avoided telling my son the details.) I was a first year teacher, and Randy was doing something involving "nuclear medicine" (which , I believe, is where he met Kris). We met because I responded to an ad put up in a grocery store. One benign story that I'll share here was the time I came home, and Randy told me that beginning the following week we would start taking weekly lessons from the Mormons. And we did, for all 8 weeks. This story, of course, has lots of fun details, the most benign being that just before the missionaries would show up, Randy would leave out several risque albums covers for them to see. Randy had the best collection of rock albums, and it was through that year - with music blaring loudly nearly all the time - that I refined my musical tastes. Randy knew rock music. We had this regular tradition of doing sit ups and then listening to Billy Joel's Piano Man (before Billy Joel 'became' Billy Joel). He liked Frampton Comes Alive and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (to name just a few that come to mind). We would regularly drive to the drive-in movie theater near our home to watch scary films. I'd get all flipped out, and on the drive home Randy did everything possible to scare me even further. So many of *those* stories too.
One day, Randy announced to me that he would be leaving to attend podiatry school. I remember asking him, "Why podiatry." He responded, "Feet are important."
After Randy moved, we lost touch. Such was life before the internet. I've thought about him (and Kris) many times over the years and knew about his practice in Santa Cruz. My memories of Randy - and our year together - are among the fondest I have of and for anyone. I've shared that time with many friends over nearly 40 years. If Kris reads this, remembers me, and ever wants to be in touch, I am at [email protected]
Randy and I had joke, a word Randy made up that has a story to indicate...well, I'll just end with that word....Hamwoto.

I worked with Randy in the MRI field and he made me laugh even when he didn't know that he did. He would take my patient's and scan them while I was in the lobby looking for them! He didn't mind helping others which is rare in this community. One time Randy took a patient to their dressing room and right when the door closed he pulled a 1/2 eaten hot dog out of his lab coat and finished his lunch :) He was so sweet, hard working and will be missed. I will treasure every second with my family even more now as Randy has reminded me that the life can change in an instant. Rest in Peace Randy.
Your friend,
Millie

Hi Kris,
I was truly shocked and saddened to hear about Randy's passing. I had not seen Randy in many years but I have great memories of him as we were in college with the whole Fullerton gang. He was such a funny and gentle soul and I remember his absolute love of music. He was my friend.
I hope you find comfort in your family and friends. I will light a candle and ask that a Mass be said in his name. Your and your family will be in my prayers.
Warm regards,
Mark Safarik

Randy was a very kind natured man and a avid music fan too. I worked with him as an advertising rep for his Podiatry practice but also knew him from the many music concert events I ran into him at. I'm sorry his time on earth ran out too soon and will think kind thoughts of Randy whenever I'm enjoying good music from The Shoreline remembering that like me Randy also enjoyed great shows there.

I'm in shock.
Randy was one friend who lived life to the fulless.
The best concerts, he was the first in line or online ordering tickets.
Remember when we burned the surf board on the beach.
Always a kid at heart.
And a darned good podiatrist.
You will be sorely missed.
May God welcome you into Heaven.

The best friend a person could have. That's what he was to me and to my son Joe. Intelligent, thoughtful, funny - so many words I could use to describe this beautiful man.
I'm so sorry for your loss Kris, Andy & Eric. He loved you all. And he was so proud and excited about Andy & Eric's futures
No words to describe the hole his passing has created. But he would have known many songs that would try.

I will always remember fishing, singing and sharing jokes with Randy. He was so intelligent and forever trying to make people laugh and smile and was such a good natured uncle to Ben and Sierra. It is hard to believe that he is no longer with us... life can be so fragile. Ride in Peace with friends and relatives that have already passed.
