In recent years as Sue's condition worsened, I would go to her mobile home and watch videos with her. She knew her movies, and even could tell whether I would like a certain movie, or not. She rarely missed. I enjoyed wonderful old and new films with her, and even as their names elude me, I'll bet she still knows them all. It's very hard to realize this vital person is no longer with us.

Sue was one of the great loves of my life. We met in Madison during the summer of 1960 when she was on break from Rollins college in Florida and I was lifeguarding and on break from the UW. We had a wonderful romance that summer which peaked the night we danced to the music of Woody Herman atop the roof of the Edgewater Hotel in Madison overlooking Lake Mendota. How much more romantic can you get?
That August I left for my Junior Year in Spain and Sue and I kept up a year-long correspondance. She later gave me all of my mailed letters to her and I kept all of hers and I still have all of them. A great history of Sue's life at Rollins, mine in Madrid, Spain and all about our hopes and dreams for the future. I returned to the University of Wisconsin in June 1961 and Sue returned from Rollins to also enroll at the UW. After 1961 my studies and work as well as hers caused us to drift apart but we have maintained a correspondance, email and occasional phone call through the years.
Sue was a beautiful, brillant and "bodacious babe" and we will always have our shared memories. I last spoke with her in June and had planned to call her in July but did not, something I now really regret. She had kept me abrest of all of her medical issues and it was very disheartening to be sure. Sue is, at last, pain free and enjoying the good afterlife. I will never forget her. How do you begin to sum up 33 years of friendship? I suppose that her last thoughtful gesture is as good as anything. On August 3rd, the day before my birthday, I received the sweetest birthday card in which she thanked me for all the things I helped her with and the things we shared. I had planned to call her and thank her for the lovely card but she was already gone. How I shall miss her. My condolences to her family and all her many other friends. She was loved.

I have known Sue for over 30 yrs. At the time, I had a house in the redwoods and Sue would always come to my parties, sit on the rear deck, and say, " I LOVE THAT I CAN SIT ON YOUR DECK AND TOUCH THE TREES FROM YOU DECK." She really appreciated Mother Nature. Sue was very involved in the community and a real lover of the arts. I remember being in the backroom of the Catalyst with Sue and her friends at happy hour. Sue would always introduce people to each other, make a positive comment about both people, and engage and bring them into the conversation. Sue always made sure you were involved with her people. I used to take wine to her years ago when she had the cottage in Pasatiempo. Sue was extra kind to me and said such wonderful, supportive things to me about my teaching, IF YOU KNEW HER, YOU LOVED HER. I will miss her zest for life but she is no longer in pain but coordinating art and programs for someone at a higher level.
love to you

I think of Sue as a really friendly and warm person. Years ago, when she was making a video on early UCSC faculty members, she asked me to be interviewed. I was a lecturer, not a professor, but thought that was very nice to be included!

Sue and I were often seated next to each other reading in our favorite book store, Capitola book cafe. She was a bright and shiny soul in spite of her pain and struggles .
The chance encounters became a friendship. .
She will be missed.
