Obituary of Dorothy C. Carcello

Services will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 11:00 A.M for Dorothy Carcello who passed away on September 25, 2015 after an extended illness. Dorothy was born in Santa Cruz on July 24, 1921 to Sam and Annie (Mono) Annand and grew up with four brothers. The family lived on the Pio Scaroni Ranch, north of Santa Cruz and it included a dairy, two 300 acre artichoke and sprout ranches and a three-acre garden. Both of her parents were avid flower/gardener hobbyists and Dorothy inherited a lifelong love of flowers and gardening. Dorothy received a teaching degree from San Jose State and first taught for two years at Larkin Valley School and then at Bay View School in Santa Cruz. The school was right across the street from the Mission Pharmacy where she met her future husband Fred Carcello, the pharmacist and owner. They lived on Escalona Drive, raised children Roseann and Andy and were married for 54 years. Dorothy and Fred nurtured beautiful flower gardens, bountiful vegetable and fruit gardens, and mesmerizing fish ponds filled with water lilies. They enjoyed successful duck hunting trips in Los Banos, weekends at their ranch in Aromas and vacations in Las Vegas and Hawaii. Dorothy volunteered for many fund raisers for Holy Cross Church and helped her mother, Annie Annand, for years decorating the church altars with beautiful flower arrangements. Dorothy is survived by her son, Andy Carcello. Sister-in-law Irene Annand; nieces Mariann, Suzy & Patti and nephews Mike, Sam, Fred & Tom and their children & grandchildren will greatly miss their special and wonderful "Aunt Dot". The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Kindred Nursing Center in Santa Cruz for many years of loving care and attention to Dorothy's needs. A crypt side service will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. in the Santa Cruz Memorial Park Mausoleum, 1927 Ocean Street, Santa Cruz, California.
