Joseph was a huge part of our lives for many years. He was our Californian anchor who welcomed our daughters every summer with open arms, open boat, open music, open heart. He blew wind into their sails, teaching them so many things that relate to the art of living which he seemed to master, from caring for animals, playing music, respecting nature and the elements, to nurturing friendship, having a good laugh and just being a positive presence. He saw Eloïse and Tessa grow up, named his boats after them (a great honor in our eyes). He never put up barriers, bringing people together, creating a warm, friendly, relaxed atmosphere where everyone could be themselves. These are such precious things that will remain with us always. We are thankful to Joseph for his kindness, tenderness, simplicity, friendship and love.

Joseph & I shared an interest in harbor birds. Recently, with his hand over his heart, he movingly described his feelings about watching a magnificent Osprey, a bird of prey. His love of wild things lives on in my memory. Sharon
When I admired Joseph’s colorful tulips, he said he’d only been gardening for 2 years and loved it. He was a “natural”!

We met Joseph in 1995 when he surveyed our sloop, in 1999 while sailing to Cabo San Lucas, and later, when walking at SOHA, he asked us if we knew someone here! Jean liked playing ukulele with him and Pete appreciated the rose bush rescue; both loved motorcycles and sailboats.

Warm, welcoming, irresistibly funny, Joseph knew how to have us in stitches when telling stories. I will keep a precious memory of our last long talk as he was sitting in the sun and telling me about Captain Cook! I will miss you, Captain Jo, you are a shining star! Brigitte
Missing Joseph, I remember the sound of his ukulele music drifting between our decks, his sense of humor, mischievous smile and generous personality. I loved evenings with delicious food, wine, stimulating conversation and, if I was lucky, music. Joseph was special.
