Obituary of Teresa Somers Barnet

Teresa Somers Barnet passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 7th at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz. Born to Joe and Teresa Kemp in Paonia Colorado, she was the 7th of eight children. She moved to Southern California at the age of 16 to attend college and on her very first day of classes met Ray Somers. They eloped to Mexico a year later and were married for 43 years prior to his death in 1982. The family, which now included three children, Grant, Carolyn and Kathi, moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1956. She received her teaching credential at San Jose State that year and taught 6th grade and junior high school English in the Los Altos School District until retiring in 1968. Ray taught Speech and English at Menlo Atherton High School and upon his retirement in 1969 they moved to Santa Cruz, CA where she lived for the remainder of her life. Teresa married again in 1984 to Douglas Barnet of Santa Cruz. Married for 28 years he predeceased her in May of this year. She was a world traveler, fine cook, mother and grandmother extraordinaire. She loved a good party, spending time with family and friends and riding the Giant Dipper with her grandkids, which she did on her 90th birthday in December 2011, when the entire family gathered for a two-day celebration. Survived by children Grant Somers (Joan), Carolyn Crist, Kathi Peregrin (Mike); grandchildren Wendy (Steve), Dawn, Amy (Jim), Damon (Belle), Jason (Tricia), Hilary (David) and 14 great-grandchildren. Also survived by Doug's children Bill and Luana, two grandchildren, Danny and Bridget and many loving members of the Kemp, Somers and Barnet extended families. At her request no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favorite charity is requested.
