Obituary of Winifred Davis
Please share a memory of Winifred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
At rest at the age of 92, Winifred Davis passed peacefully on January 7 in her beloved Felton home with her daughter Vicki at her side.
Winnie was a San Francisco native who remembered walking across the Golden Gate Bridge when it first opened and she attended the 1939 World's Fair at Treasure Island. After graduating from Lick-Wilmerding High School, she went on to San Francisco State University for two years before completing a secretarial course. Her first job was as a secretary at an ice cream plant. She met her husband after he spotted her while she was walking to work. She loved to tell the story of the San Francisco police officer who frequently managed to be at the same coffee shop whenever she took her break. He finally got up the courage to invite her to the Policeman's Ball. She accepted and the rest is history.
Her husband, William Davis, was a widower with two children nine and six. Winnie quickly added one of her own and she embraced her instant family with enthusiasm. Her patience never failed. Although she was not raised in an outdoorsy family, she gamely travelled with her husband and new family on camping trips in the California wilderness.
In 1970, after her husband retired, they moved to Felton. Her grandchildren have fond memories of summer visits and camping adventures with her as well as camping in the trailer that was parked for years in their driveway.
Winnie was the much respected matriarch of the Davis family. Her three children, Vicki, Diane and Jack will miss her unifying presence. She will also be missed by grandchildren Jon and Yvonne and by great grandchildren Dominic, Jackie, Christy and Elle and also by her daughter-in-law Linda of whom she was particularly fond.
The family would especially like to thank Tina Cochran, who was Winnie's companion and caregiver for the last ten years of her life. Vicki also thanks the Felton Fire Department who helped her though many crises and Hospice of Santa Cruz County who were there for Winnie in her final hours.
There will be a private interment. A celebration of Winnie's life will be held in her garden sometime in the spring. Her friends and members of her church community will be invited.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Salvation Army.
