I , too, was shocked to hear of Ned's death. He seemed to be in vibrant, energetic health. I first met him a very long time ago when we both worked at a fruit and vegetable stand on Mission Sreet in Santa Cruz where the Herb Room now stands. He had a full head of long hair, then, and was always sarcastically friendly to me.
I was so glad to run into him again a few years ago after I had moved back to Santa Cruz, and to find out that we both had gone into teaching. I didn't know him well, but he seemed an especially freindly, sensitive, intelligent man. I loved his smile. I'm very sad he's gone.

I just found out about Ned's passing at our 40 year Paly High reunion this past Sunday, and I am still reeling and feeling deeply saddened. I went to school with Ned from Walter Hays Elementary through Paly High, played a lot of tennis with him, and appreciated having him as a buddy. One of the stories I like to tell about Ned is of how he lifted my spirits at a Paly dance. The day of a dance, I had gotten my hair cut, a terribly botched up job, and thought I was going to die of embarrassment as I stood alone by the wall. Ned saved me when he came up and said, "Oh, you got a haircut. It looks nice," and asked me to dance. What a sweetie he was. I'm so sorry he is no longer around, and my heart goes out to his family and all who loved him.

I was saddened to hear about Mr. Worthington's passing nearly 3 months ago. He was my history teacher for freshman and sophomore year at Soquel High. What I remember most about him was the unique ways he would engage the class while teaching. I remember that he would organize Jeopardy on Fridays with the questions taylored to topics we were studying at the time.
Mr. Worthington- thank you for being a wonderful teacher. You are missed by many.

It has been about a month and a half since I learned about Ned's passing and I'm still having a difficult time accepting that such a vibrant, alive, and present person is no longer with us. I haven't been able to write this until now. Please, all of Ned's family, friends, and loved ones, accept my consolation, belated though it might be. I hope that the pain of losing him has abated some with the passage of time and that memories of his spiritedness will keep yours buoyant.
It was great to know you, Ned.

Mr. Worthington's enthusiasm for history and politics was infectious. I recall often hanging around after class just to chat about one thing or another that he mentioned. He was always very generous with his time. I joined the tennis team in part to hangout more with him (I wasn't very good at tennis, but he didn't mind). I regret not having the chance to tell him that he was an important force in encouraging me to pursue a PhD and make a career of studying history. Thanks Mr. Worthington for your generosity and spirit. You will be missed.

Hello Ned....
We simply crossed paths at Paly.... As Tennis Courts were near the Wrestling Room :---) You always seemed to have a "be lucky, have fun" smile on your face. I think you were class of 1974 or 1975. All my best to your family. Thanks for sharing and being you.

Our memories of Ned will center around one or a dozen or a hundred evenings at our dinner table with Ned, Anthony Thomas, Susan and Wayne Bassano and others. Ned, of course, was often the life of the party. He had the mind of a socialist and the tastes of a patrician; he loved a good political debate as much as he loved good wine and food. As our dear friend, Wayne Bassano puts it, "Ned was never boring." Indeed, right or wrong or somewhere in between, he was witty, vibrant, complicated and wonderfully alive. He could wax poetic about the tennis game of Roger Federer, the dark side of American militarism/imperialism, a good bottle of French wine, and the great riders of the Tour de France all in the course of an evening.
He was a good friend, a man of many talents, a story-teller, an athlete, a fine cook, and an intellectual. We miss him terribly.

Ned was my son's tennis coach at Santa Cruz High 17 years ago. He was an excellent coach, imparting his vitality and love for the game to a group of challenging teen age boys. He managed to whip the team into shape, despite the odds, which also translated into more enthusiasm from my son for school in general, who went from a fledgling C student to the honor roll and became the 4th best player on the team. It was his best high school year, largely attributable to Ned.
Ned and I remained friends and were neighbors for the past 10 years. He helped me move into my Seabright house a decade ago and he brought the champagne. I recently attended Ned's last birthday party, held in his back yard and was impressed and reminded once again of his enthusiasm for life in general and overall positive upbeat spirit. He loved his family and spoke highly and often of his mom and his son. Whenever I hear a Lucinda Williams song on the radio I think of Ned. He loved her! I remain stunned by his somewhat sudden departure and already miss him very much.
