Obituary of Robert Clinton Wrede

Bob Wrede, 85, of Aptos, CA died at home on Monday, December 5, 2011 after a brief illness. He is survived by Jeanne his wife, and best friend of sixty-three years; Scott and Susie Wrede of Morgan Hill, Brian and Laura Wrede of Gilroy, and preceded in death by his youngest son James Wrede in 1991. His brother Don Wrede of Cache, Oklahoma, also preceded him in death in 2010. Bob leaves a wonderful legacy of eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Bob was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving during WWII. He attended Miami University, the University of Cincinnati, and completed his PhD in mathematics at Indiana University. He was a well-loved professor in the mathematics department at San Jose State University where he taught from 1955 to 1994. He also authored several mathematic books including "Introduction to Vector and Tensor Analysis," and revised "Schaum's Outline of Advanced Calculus, Third Edition." Among his many accomplishments, Bob was a senior's tennis tournament trophy winner playing at locations such as the Los Gatos Swim and Racquet Club, Almaden Valley Athletic Club, and Seascape Tennis Club. Bob played a mean game of tennis well into his 80s. He was especially proud of being elected to the Caldwell Hall of Fame by his peers in Carthage, Ohio where he grew up, and excelled in several sports. A celebration of his life was held at a private ceremony in the Santa Cruz mountains on Sunday, December 11,2011 at the family cabin Bob, Jeanne and their sons built from the ground up. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations made to Hospice of Santa Cruz, or San Jose State University Math Department scholarship funds.
