Obituary of Frederick Joseph Bourgeois

Fred J. Bourgeois, III, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at the age of 54 after a long fight with carcinoid cancer. Fred was born in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, on July 4, 1962. He grew up in Mississippi and Alabama and earned bachelors and masters degrees in computer science and physics at Tulane University in Louisiana. After graduation, Fred spent a year teaching computer science at the University of Minnesota, then spent the rest of his career working in California on defense systems, compilers, and cyber security. Fred has a patent in cyber security. Fred started up and owned his own software/systems companies. Most recently, Fred spent six years as Chief Executive Officer a large, world-wide, volunteer Google Lunar XPrize team: Team FREDNET, The Open Space Society, Inc. whose mission was to design and send a rover to the moon. Fred wrote songs and sang professionally in college. Fred had many, many friends across the country and world given his work with the Google Lunar XPrize team. He is survived by his wife, Karen; son, SPC Frederick J. Bourgeois, IV; mother, Linda R. Bourgeois; father, Fred Bourgeois, Jr; sisters Jacqueline Bourgeois and Claire Bourgeois; and brother, Elliot Bourgeois. There will be a memorial service held at 2pm on Wed., Dec. 28 at Oakwood Funeral Home, 3301 Paul Sweet Rd., Santa Cruz, CA 95065, (831) 475-2464, followed by a reception afterwards.
