Obituary of Michael Waverlie Otto
Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Michael Waverlie Otto, 69, of East Garrison, CA passed away in his home surrounded by loving family on December 9, 2017 after a prolonged valiant battle with cancer. Mike was born June 22, 1948 in Norfolk, Virginia, the first son of Charles Everett and Mildred Louise Otto. As the son of a career Marine, Mike lived many places but the family eventually settled in Oceanside, Ca where Mike's lifelong love affair with the beach and the ocean began. Mike was an Eagle Scout and took great pride in attending his nephew's Eagle Court of Honor in 2014. Shortly before graduating from Oceanside High in 1966 he met his soulmate, Charlotte. Mike and Charlotte married two years later and shared love and adventures together for the remainder of his life. Mike and Charlotte moved to the Bay Area in 1970, where Mike held a variety of occupations, including electronics, retail, auto mechanics, managing a hard rock band, and Aerotech. For the last 15 years he worked at Lockheed/NASA and Wyle/NASA. Mike took great pride in being part of the team working at NASA.
Mike and Charlotte moved to Boulder Creek, CA in 1981 where they lived until a recent move to Monterey County so Mike could be closer to the ocean. Their home in Boulder Creek is full of memories of Mike's generosity to family and friends. It was there Mike got his first big screen TV so he could watch his beloved 49ers in High Def with surround sound! Mike enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, and driving his dream car, an Alfa Romero convertible, on Highway 9 and along the coast. Mike's biggest joy was going to Hawaii (often Maui) with Charlotte every year. While there, he enjoyed soaking up the scenery, the animals and the laid back lifestyle. Mike had quite a collection of Hawaiian Shirts which he often wore with his flip flops.
In addition to Charlotte, his wife of 49 years, Mike is survived by his two children Jason (Rachelle), of Medford, OR and Jalene of Santa Cruz, CA, 7 grandchildren (one of whom preceded him in death), and 1 great-grandchild. Mike is also survived by 4 siblings, 12 nephews and nieces, having been preceded in death by his loving parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 6, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Saint Michael's Church in Boulder Creek with a reception to follow. Please feel free to wear your favorite Hawaiian Shirt in Mike's honor.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Saint Michael's, 13005 Pine Street, Boulder Creek, CA 95005. (831) 338-6112
