Obituary of Edward Washburn Weeks
Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edward Washburn Weeks passed away peacefully in his family home surrounded by loved ones on Sept. 26, 2018 at the age of 91. Born in San Mateo, CA on Jan. 24, 1927, Ed was the youngest of five, born to the late Edward Weeks, Sr. and Hazel Virginia Bell. As a young boy, Ed tended crops on the family farm and milked "Bessie" the cow daily.
Ed was an excellent student, he was awarded the Gold Shield and was Valedictorian of his graduating class at Pescadero High School. He attempted to join the Air Force when Pearl Harbour was attacked in 1941 but was disqualified due to a medical condition. He continued the effort with every other branch, but to no avail. This became his greatest disappointment. His brothers, Milton and Harold both served in World War II as pilots. Harold flew 35 missions in his B-24 Liberator, while Milton was tragically killed when his plane crashed into the SF Bay on February 9, 1943. Ed was extremely proud of his brothers' service to our country and spoke of them often.
Ed met the love of his life, Joan Overacker, and married on April 5, 1947. He farmed acreage in Pescadero for a time and later worked for and retired from Suburban Propane. He and Joan had two daughters, and in 1955 purchased the historical family home on Goulson Street. Ed lost his beloved wife to cancer in February 18, 1979. Just prior, Ed started the Pescadero Flag Fund to erect a flag pole near the Pescadero Post Office, raising and lowering the flag daily, until recent months. He was a lifelong committee member and groundskeeper of Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Ed satisfied his passion for flying by obtaining his pilot's license in 1981. Sometime thereafter, he found love again in a fellow widow, Marie Fuhs. They married and spent their golden years traveling and enjoying community gatherings in Pescadero. Marie passed away from illness in 2006. Ed was known as the "historian" of the area, interacting with friends and tourists, providing information they may want or need. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Ed is survived by his daughters, Beverly Martin and Christine Rudolph, five grandchildren, Lisa, John, Adrienne, Melissa and Megan, their spouses, and 10 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Francis Dubel, Florence Pomi, Milton Weeks and Harold Weeks.
A memorial service and celebration of Ed's life will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pescadero Community Church, refreshments to follow. A private family graveside ceremony will be held Sunday, October 28, 2018 at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Pescadero Flag Fund (c/o Ruth Moore, P.O. Box 162, Pescadero 94060), or your local Hospice provider.
