Dear Margie,
It's been a long time. I was saddened to see your mom's obituary in the paper, but knowing that she had such a long and rich life, I'm sure her passing came with acceptance and peace. I will be out of town on October 1, or else I would see you at her service. Since I can't be there, I thought I'd share a memory with you here. I remember your mom best on the mornings after sleepovers at your house. Your mom would make us aebelskivers and she taught me how to make them too. They are little miracles! I bought an aebelskiver pan in my 20s and occasionally made them for friends, not really knowing their Danish heritage. When I met my husband Bruce in my 30s, it caused a big commotion in his family that I had an aebelskiver pan and knew what to do with it. You see, Bruce is 100% Danish. All four of his grandparents were born in Denmark and a lot of emphasis was put on keeping Danish traditions. So I was welcomed into the family, even though my genetics are not pure. I want to think that they would have welcomed me anyway, but you never know. So when I make aebelskivers, I think of your calm, kind mom and thank her for passing along this little skill. I will be back in Santa Cruz on October 3. If you are still around, I would love to see you.
