Diane, Dorothy, Jim and family
It was with a broken heart I read of Carol's passing. I have such fond memories of her, all of you and your parents on Christmas Eves and many other memories of her being one of the nicest and humble ladies I could have ever met. I'll miss her as I do Rita and Larry and only wish that I lcould have attended her service today, as it would have meant a lot for me to see you and the family. As it was, the rain and wind brought trees and mud on my driveway last night and blockaded me from getting off the property today. I am writing this just about the time of the beginning of the service, so I feel that I am there with her and all of you.
I will plant a tree in her memory. With my deepest prayers and condolences, may Carol rest in peace. Love Jim Helmer

I met Carol 27 years ago when I started working at the City. She was so kind and I always enjoyed visiting with her.
My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

To Carol’s Family: It is well known that Carol was an incredible advocate for the Santa Cruz Fire Department family for over 3 decades. There was no bigger fan of our firefighters and no one more passionate than Carol when it came to caring about their safety and supporting them in every way possible. As my Executive Assistant for over 12 years, she proved herself to be one of the best employees I ever had the pleasure to work with during my 35 years in the fire service. In large measure, this was due to her intense loyalty to the organization, her amazing institutional knowledge, her work ethic and her great sense of humor (her laugh was contagious and loved by everyone!). She had a critical ability to “roll with the punches” and keep a positive attitude, even during some of the more difficult times that we experienced working for local government during painful budget struggles and beyond. She and I would save up our frustrations and complaining and over our occasional lunches we would decompress and laugh (instead of cry) over some of the crazy things we had to deal with as a team. On a personal note, I always really appreciated how she would check in with me, asking about how our kids and grandkids are doing, and remembering in detail some of the family updates that my wife Jane would write about in our Christmas cards each year. I will miss her, the Santa Cruz Fire Department family will miss her and we know how deeply missed she will be by her family and friends. She was truly a blessing to all of us.
