Carlos could bring sunlight into a windowless room. I can already hear him telling me that doesn’t make sense and explaining the physics of how light travels. I would then tell him that he could make flowers bloom on Mars and he would laugh and call me stupid. He’d probably pull up a YouTube video on Martian soil and laugh at me more.
He was a paradox of a man. Sometimes he was silly with childlike wonder, sometimes he was the adult in the room teaching, sometimes he was remarkably poetic even though he would never admit it. In all forms, Carlos was fun.
Loving him was equally paradoxical. It feels like we got to see so much of him and not enough of him at the same time.
It was truly a gift to know Carlos.
