Obituary
Obituary of Douglas Lee Hutmacher
Please share a memory of Douglas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Douglas Lee Hutmacher passed away after a courageous battle with cancer which he bore with grace and optimism; his wife, Theresa (Terry) at his side, holding his hand. He was 70 years old.
Born to Don and Virginia Hutmacher at Smokey Hills AFB in Salina, KS, Doug graduated from Dublin High School and then UC Davis with a BS in Psychology and a minor in Math. Later, he earned an AS in Computer Science at Cabrillo College. It was at UC Davis in the Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh, that he met his best friend and beloved wife, Theresa. They continued to play in the California Repercussions Band after graduation from Davis.
Doug worked at UC Davis until moving to Santa Cruz, becoming one of the first employees at the Chaminade Resort. After a few years with Chaminade, he worked at Watkins-Johnson in various positions until earning his Computer Science degree. He then moved into the tech industry, working at several start-ups until finding a home with Dasher Technologies, where he enjoyed working for many years. His last few years were spent with Alliance Member Services (AMS) in their IT Group. A very caring and friendly person, Doug made many cherished friends at both companies.
Doug was very involved in his two boys’ endeavors: coaching youth soccer and Little League baseball teams as well as serving as Cubmaster for Pack 676 and Asst Scoutmaster (ASM) for Troop 642 and ASM/Scoutmaster for Troop 618. He was honored to be a mentor in these programs and very much enjoyed working with the Scouts. He also volunteered with the Monterey Bay Area Scent Work Club with patience and good humor. He loved meeting people and petting their dogs. We have it from multiple sources that he gave the very best skritches.
Doug loved to garden and share what he grew. He enjoyed fixing things and rescued many a friend’s computer when things went wrong. Doug was a voracious reader of sci-fi and owned hundreds of books which he liked to read over and over.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Theresa, and his two boys of whom he was extremely proud, Brynden (Tiona) Hutmacher and Michael (Kaitlyn) Hutmacher. He is also survived by loving siblings, Julie Hutmacher and Ken (Terry) Hutmacher and nieces & nephews whom he treasured. Although Doug has left behind many people who he cherished, his kind and generous spirit will live on in all of us. We miss him very much.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 2pm at the Oakwood Memorial Crystal Chapel in Santa Cruz. In lieu of flowers, Doug would be happy with donations to the American Cancer Society.
