Obituary of Dennis Allen Sutherland

Dennis Allen Sutherland passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2023, after a 3-year battle with cancer. He was a warrior and fought with every fiber of his being while touching many lives with his gentle spirit and positive outlook. Dennis was born in Colorado Springs, CO. He graduated from La Mirada High School and earned a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Whittier College, Whittier, CA. After relocating to Santa Cruz, CA, Dennis enjoyed a 33-year career in the wine industry with Gallo Sales Company. Dennis is survived by his loving wife Carol, daughter Nicole Pippus (Chris) of Santa Cruz, and grandchildren Isaiah Hamm (Blanca) of Scotts Valley, Gabriella Hamm of Watsonville, Kaylah Hamm of Watsonville, Lunden Martisius of Capitola, and Elijah Fierro of Santa Cruz, and Paige Pippus of Santa Cruz. He is also survived by his brothers Terry Sutherland (Beverly) of La Mirada, CA, Steven Sutherland of Sun City, CA, and sister LeeAnn Gilman (Jeff) of Hollister, CA, brother-in-law Robert Carlon of Savannah, GA, his father and mother-in-law Bill and Rita Winings of Santa Cruz, CA, sister-in-law Rachel Barthel of Santa Cruz, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his daughter Rachelle Hamm of Sutter, CA, and his parents Kenneth Sutherland of Lake City, MN, and Loni Knowles of Sun City, CA. He also leaves behind his best canine friend, Tucker! Carol was the love of Dennis' life; he nicknamed her "Princess" and did everything he could to make her life easier. He was known for writing daily love notes to her. His loving actions and words showed how much he loved and cherished her; he would say, God first, then Carol! He set a loving example for his children and grandchildren as a wonderful husband, father, and Papa. Dennis cherished his children and grandchildren and spent time taking them camping, fishing, boating, and sporting events. Dennis enjoyed barbecuing for his family and friends. He cherished his special friendships with the "KB" brothers, watching sports while having a microbrew and tasty food. His generous, loving spirit will be missed by all who knew him. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Twin Lakes Church, Monschke Hall, 2701 Cabrillo College Drive, Aptos, CA 95003. A reception to follow at Aptos Village Park located at 100 Aptos Creek Rd, Aptos, CA.
