My deepest apologies for adding this SO late.
Its taken me months to come up with the words to write here. Brent's passing came as a shock and right before I began extensive travel with my family over the summer and I just couldn't get my mind wrapped around what to say because to be honest, I didn't know Brent very well, but what he did for me and my family 3 years ago changed our lives forever and I've never found the right words to thank him for literally saving our family.
Let me provide context. I worked with Brent at Netflix. We worked together on a couple of small projects and interacted in a few offsites but I never knew him well personally, but well enough that he knew who I was and what I did at the company.
In the summer of 2021, during the pandemic, I took my family to Hawaii for the summer. My 16 year old son decided to take a surfing lesson on Waikiki with his dad and a couple of friends. On the last wave of the lesson, he stood up on his surfboard and felt a pop in his back and some pain and swam back to the beach. Within 10 mins he lost all feeling in his legs and never regained the use of legs since. He was diagnosed with surfer's myelopathy, a rare non-traumatic injury that's like a stroke of the spine. There is no known cause, cure, or treatment for it. There we were in the ICU at Queen's Hospital in Honolulu and we needed to get him to a rehabilitation hospital. We chose Shepherd Center in Atlanta because it is only 1 of 2 hospitals in the country that have a spinal cord injury program specifically for teens. Our insurance company agreed to pay for his treatment there -- but NOT the transportation by air ambulance to get him there. They were only willing to fly him to California. We were willing to pay to get him the rest of the way but if we did, insurance would not pay for his transportation to CA if we did that. Don't ask me why, they just wouldn't. Out of sheer desperation, I was reaching out to anyone I could think of for help in figuring out how to get my now paralyzed 16 year old son to Atlanta. I knew it was a long shot, but I knew Brent oversaw Netflix's transportation division so I reached out to Brent by email to see if we could somehow borrow or rent one of Netflix's private jets to get him off the island to Atlanta but it turned out they're not certified as air ambulances so it would have never worked. Time was running out. The bed we had secured for him in Atlanta was going to be given to someone else unless we found transportation ASAP. About 24 hrs after sending that email, I got a call from Brent. I vividly remember standing in the bedroom of the rented house near the hospital and being in complete disbelief as he told me that he had gotten permission from Netflix to cover the cost of the air ambulance from Hawaii to Atlanta. I was absolutely stunned. I cannot tell you how much despair I was in at the time and to hear him say those words was like a miracle. He told me to just give whatever information was needed to secure the air ambulance to his newly hired transportation manager (who was equally stunned the company was helping me in this way) and that he would take care of the rest and to focus on my son. I will always remember he said, "It's the right thing to do. I can't imagine something like this happening to one of my kids, it's just the right thing to do."
Within 36 hours my son was on a flight to Atlanta where he stayed for 2 months in rehab. The care he received there was outstanding. It provided my son a solid foundation for a new life. He is now a sophomore at the University of Arizona studying economics and playing Division 1 wheelchair basketball for the university (who actively recruited him). Last year, the team was undefeated and made it to the national finals where they lost their only game by only a few points. My son now aspires to reach the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles for wheelchair basketball and his current coach thinks he could make it.
I truly believe that without that start at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, where he started shooting baskets in their gym, he would not be where he is today - thriving at university and shooting for the Paralympics. Whether he gets there or not, it was because of Brent's efforts to help our family get him the best care after this horrific injury is what has made the difference in not only my son's life but our entire family. If my son had ended up at a different hospital, I have no doubt he would not be doing as well as he is right now, and our family would be in much more turmoil. Instead, because of Brent's efforts in helping him get a good foundation after his injury, he finished high school with almost perfect grades, was on the Homecoming court, won 3 CA state gold medals in adaptive track, won MVP for western junior regional wheelchair basketball, got recruited to U of A's wheelchair basketball team, and secured enough scholarships to cover his entire undergrad degree (tuition, room, board) for 4 years.
I would like everyone to know what an AMAZING thing Brent did for my son. As I said before, Brent and I didn't know each other very well. He could've easily ignored my email which wouldn't have surprised me because it was such a random/long-shot request. But he took the time and effort over a holiday weekend to make calls and plead my case to company execs for the approval of the air ambulance expense. I really want to emphasize to everyone that what he did was not only extraordinary but a testament to his character and his love of family. He did it because it was not only "the right thing to do" but because of his love of his kids. If this had happened to one of his kids, he would've wanted someone to do this for them.
I truly believe that the successes my son has had and will have in future are a direct result of Brent's kindness and compassion. I feel ashamed that I haven't been able to fully express my gratitude for what he did until now. How does one thank someone for literally saving my child and my family's life?
I am absolutely gutted that he is no longer with us but I hope this story is a good reminder of the best of Brent. Like I said at the start, I didn't know him well personally, but as far as I'm concerned, his action in helping my family, in our darkest hour, will always be remembered and cherished. And with every milestone my son reaches in future, I will always be thankful for what Brent did to help get him there.

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this in memory of you, Brent. Although we are cousins you were like a brother to me and so many of my fondest childhood memories and adventures included you. You were always fun to be around and we were like two peas in a pod when we were young children. So many weekend memories at your Mom’s house in Greenbelt…at the pool swimming, riding on the back of your mom’s bike in the kiddie seats, searching for moon rocks in the neighboring wooded quarry, feeding the ducks and so many holidays spent together.
And in your teenage years when you lived in California and then came back to Maryland and lived with us and went to my high school for a while it was awesome. You marched to your own beat and I always appreciated that about you. You came to Maryland with your California clothes, your unique haircut, and your love for Tears for Fears and Depeche Mode which I learned to love right along with you.
We used to hang out and watch tv shows and movies and have snacks in my room often. I will never forget how I used to find used chip bags, cookie/candy wrappers and empty glasses and soda cans tucked away in corners of my dresser and on my closet shelves afterwards. By the way, I rarely, if ever, saw you leave them but lo and behold I would find them days and sometimes weeks later. At the time it drove me crazy but over the years it became one of those fun and quirky memories of you and it still warms my heart to this day. You were one of a kind “Wick” as I called you in H.S.
It was great to watch you grow into the man you became and see you fall in love with Sarah and become a loving husband and then the joy you had in starting your family. You were a proud Dad and lit up when you talked about Ben, Jon and Sam and whatever they were into at the time. I always loved hearing about Team Wickens and the memorable life moments and travel adventures you all had.
I know life isn’t always easy or perfect but you lived your life to the fullest and have left us way too soon. I wish we had more time. You always had a love for family and your friends. I will always love you, Cuz, and will miss you more than you will ever know. Rest in peace my brother until we meet again. Love, Todd

One very special early memory I have of Brent is him playing his guitar for hours at our townhouse in Maryland years ago. Brent was in town and staying over at our place for the night. He was always full of energy and was a lot of fun to laugh and joke around with and I remember that night when he started to play his guitar it seemed as if a sense of calm and peace came over him while he was lost in the music. I can visualize this memory as if it was yesterday. He was so incredibly talented. I have been lucky enough to hear him play over the years and it was always very special.
I have many other fun memories of Brent with his loving family and I will treasure them all. Love you Brent and may you rest in peace.

Brent, David, Eric and I became stepsiblings as adults. The cool thing about that is we were all just able to be friends. I have so many memories of Brent and almost all of them make me smile. There was the time he almost hit the actress Minnie Driver with our minivan in Park City, Utah, at the Sundance Film Festival (in Brent’s defense, she stepped in from of the car!). Or the times when I was in the hospital last summer and he sent me texts checking on me, and a funny video of Sam, when he was little, doing a bottle flip, just to cheer me up. Or how many evenings ended with Brent and his guitar, singing. But my favorite memory is when I was visiting not long after Jon was born. I was sitting on the deck cuddling him, watching Ben and Tuva play in the yard, when Brent sat down beside me. He told me that seeing me love his babies as much as I did made me his sister, not just a stepsister. That moment is etched in my heart forever. Brent touched so many lives. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “It’s not the length of life, it’s the depth of life.” Brent’s life was definitely not long enough but he lived life to the fullest. His proudest accomplishment will always be Ben, Jon, Sam and his love for Sarah. Love, Aunt Beth

I met Brent’s mother Nancy when he was 10 years old. He was a sweet, albeit mischievous boy, as are most boys that age. He had the most beautiful shiny red hair. As he grew into his adult body, he grew his hair long. It fell down his back, was curly and full. My son was only 2 yrs old when we met and he always felt he had a big brother in Brent. Our boys spent a lot of time growing up, together and apart, throughout the 80s.
In the 90s, Brent wore his long hair pulled back until one day, he didn’t have that hair anymore. It was just…gone. When I asked him where his gorgeous hair went, he said, “it was too much to deal with so I cut it off and donated it to Locks of Love”.
In the years that followed, Nancy coordinated meetups with me and our boys in "the city” (San Francisco); i.e., Thanksgiving, 4th of July, and Saturday night dinners. On one occasion, Brent invited Nancy and I to join him for dinner in North Beach. After a scrumptious meal at the Stinking Rose, he introduced us the the concept of “dine and dash”. We said, “uhh…naww, we will pay”. On another occasion after meeting Brent and one of his many friends in the city for dinner, it was well after 11pm when he spontaneously decided to take onus on a wild goose chase. We followed his car as he drove up and down those steep/narrow streets leading us to a "mystery location" in the Haight. His friend worked for fashion designer, Betsey Johnson. She had the keys to one of Betsey's boutiques. Brent unlocked the door, turned on the lights and said, “ok ladies, the store is all yours for the night”. What a fun night !! Nancy and I spent hours and hours trying on wild and crazy outfits.
That night, Brent excitedly told Nancy and I all about this new start-up company he was working for called WebVan. He suggested we buy stock in the company, saying this company was going to be HUGE. We told him we would wait and see how the company does. When WebVan went belly-up we were glad we didn’t buy any stock. Years later, he excitedly told us about a new start-up company he was going to working for, called Netflix, and again, suggested we should buy stock when the company announces their IPO. Again, we said we would wait and see how the company does. BIG mistake.
I enjoyed attending Brent and Sarah’s wedding in Chicago. One of the best moments was when, at the reception, Brent took the mic to announce the band then told us, “you all better get up and dance, I paid a LOT of money for this band”.
Brent, I danced at your wedding but I’m not dancing now. I’m very sad.
I will always remember Brent for his curiosity, his lively sense of adventure, his creativity, and his courageous spontaneity. It is no coincidence he was born a flaming redhead. His flame burned bright - a flame of pure joy, and it warmed everyone in his presence.

I have nothing but great memories of every time I spent with Brent. Always full steam ahead and looking for the next adventure. One of my favorite memories is when I was living in California and he had just flown around the world in only a few days. He needed something for a headache and asked if I had anything for it. I was just about to give Tuva his flea and tick meds so I set the package on the counter and went upstairs to get something for him. When I came back down stairs the package was open and the tube was empty. He had taken that thinking it was some new kind of new Ibuprofen. It was hilarious, I was laughing for hours after he went to bed. Even when I was on the phone with poison control making sure that wouldn’t make him sick.
