Obituary of Catherine Starr Young

Catherine Starr Young Nov. 8, 1957 - Nov. 2, 2013 At rest after a courageous battle with cancer. Catherine was born in Oakland, raised in Piedmont and lived in Santa Cruz since 1976. Catherine was the beloved daughter of Norman and Helen Young of Piedmont, the adored sister of Anne Young Barrington (husband James) of Corralitos and the devoted aunt of Joseph Kochlacs. She is survived by her aunt, Barbara Young Stewart of Walnut Creek, and her cousins, John Stewart (wife Anne) of Piedmont, and Nancy Stewart Griffith (husband Richard) of Carmel, and Caryl Ventham (husband Barry) of Dorchester England. Also surviving is her loving little companion, Lily. A talented and inspiring musician, Catherine taught piano and bagpipes. She began learning to play the Highland Pipes at age 11 at Havens Elementary School in Piedmont, continuing onto become Pipe Major of the Piedmont Highlanders High School bagpipe band. Playing bagpipes was a life long passion. At the time of her death she was the Pipe Major of the Stewart Tartan Pipes and Drums. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and students and family.
