Lois Hewitt passed away peacefully on September 16, 2017 at the age of 90. She was born in Santa Cruz to Andrew Majors and Eugenie Priscilla (Henneuse) Majors on October 29, 1926 and is a descendant of Santa Cruz pioneers Joseph Majors and Maria de los Angeles Castro.
Lois attended Santa Cruz High School and was a waitress at the old Hi Ho Café on Ocean Street. She devoted her life to her family and she cared for her disabled son until his death at the age of 44. She attended school with him every day from grades K-12 and took him to Special Olympics events. Spending time with her grandchildren and taking them to annual local events such as airshows and rodeos was a favorite pastime of hers.
Lois enjoyed dancing, shopping and traveling. She visited Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, Solvang and Santa Barbara. She also raised Orchids and belonged to the Orchid Growers Society. Amongst her full life Lois was also a member of the Women's Auxiliary at the Skills Center for Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities and the Live Oak Fire Department.
Lois is survived by her son, Robert P. Menefee; Granddaughters, Stephanie Dale and Christina Menefee; great-grandson, William Menefee-Schindler; and a niece. She was preceded in death by her son, Nolan James Menefee, and husbands, Robert Hewitt and Darrel James Menefee.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Monterey Bay Horsemanship & Therapeutic Center, 475 Eucalyptus Way, La Selva Beach, CA 95076 (www.mbhorsecenter.com). At this time no services will be held.
